Before you leave
The Mirror
The relationship reality check.
I built this because I answered versions of these questions dishonestly for years, and it cost me and the people I love. It is a guided self-reflection tool for anyone weighing separation, divorce, infidelity, or quietly checking out. It does not score your marriage and it will not tell you what to do. It asks you to examine your own conduct before you assign blame or make a permanent decision inside temporary pain.
I built The Mirror because I needed it, not because I am qualified to diagnose your marriage. This is self-reflection, not therapy, legal advice, medical advice, or a verdict on whether your marriage should continue. If you or your children are unsafe right now, put this down and get qualified local help first.
Scripture Lens
James 1:22–25
“But be doers of the word, and not only hearers, deluding your own selves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man looking at his natural face in a mirror; for he sees himself, and goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. But he who looks into the perfect law of freedom and continues, not being a hearer who forgets but a doer of the work, this man will be blessed in what he does.”
I read this verse for years before it actually landed. James is not describing someone who refuses to look in the mirror. He is describing someone who looks, sees exactly what is there, and then walks off and forgets it by lunch. That was me for a long time. I could see my own behavior clearly in a counselor's office and lose the memory of it by the time I got home. This tool is not aimed at your spouse, and it will not settle who was worse. It asks what you actually saw about yourself, and whether your conduct will look any different by next week because of it.

Section A
Resentment
I carried resentment for years and called it something else. It went quiet, and then it started narrating everything my wife did.
Section B
Communication
I never lacked words. I had plenty. What I lacked was a way of using them that left anything standing afterward.
Section C
Betrayal & truth
I edited my own story for years and told myself it was protection. It was delay with better manners. Nothing heals on an edited account.
Section D
Intimacy
There was a season when closeness in my marriage turned into currency. I was counting, and I was not the only one, and neither of us felt chosen.
Section E
Forgiveness & accountability
I learned this one on both sides. Forgiveness is something you can do alone. Reconciliation is not. Confusing the two hurt me twice.
Section F
Outside influences
Before I left, I assembled a jury. It was made of people who already agreed with me. I picked them for that reason, whether I admitted it or not.
Section G
Children & family
My kids do not remember the arguments as clearly as I feared they would. They remember the climate, and what repair looked like when I bothered to do it.
Section H
Finances & reality
I compared fantasy's best day to my worst one and let fantasy win, because fantasy never has to show its math. Numbers do not participate in that trick.
Section I
Counseling & repair
I sat in rooms with counselors for years and thousands of dollars. Attendance is not repair. I had to actually practice something, or the room did nothing.
Section J
Faith
I used to reach for Scripture to move my wife, not to examine myself. It took a while to admit that was what I was doing.
Section K
The final mirror
No scale here. These are the questions I still have to ask myself, and they do the actual work. Answer them slowly.
Answer what you can, honestly
Look at what you just said
Faith in Practice
Take the single hardest thing you saw in yourself here and practice its opposite for thirty days without waiting for your spouse to match it. Humility, respect, empathy and goodwill are behaviors before they are feelings. I had to go first more than once before anything moved, and I did not get to keep score of who noticed.
Pray This
God, I came here wanting to be proven right. Show me instead what is true about me. Give me the honesty to name my own part without excuse, the humility to go first, and the patience to leave the outcome with you instead of forcing it. Protect anyone in this house who is not safe, and give me wisdom about myself that I do not currently have.
